a long time ago, I was a student.

one of the classes I took was statistics.

http://blog.okcupid.com/

these guys made a dating site out of statistics. what I've linked however, is not the dating site. it's the blog where they discuss what they learn about people by the statistics they gather.

This is a large scale example of sociology-by-statistics. and it's kind of awesome, I encourage everyone to check it out.

I love this comic, and I encourage everyone to read it.

it's called 9 shot sonata, and it's... well, it's battle between heaven and hell.

monkies! go, read! (atm it's only 22 pages long, so, it won't take too long)

canadian money [Oct. 21st, 2009|12:56 pm]
so, a couple weeks ago, I decided I'd save as much change as I could... y'know, not spend the change I got back, when I payed cash for something, which isn't as often as you might think...

today I informally surveyed my change cup. not counting a mountain of pennies and nickels and dimes, I have 36 43 dollars.

I'mna save up for an ipod, and buy it with loonies.

a long overdue update [Aug. 5th, 2009|08:05 pm]
so, I've not updated my Lj in a bit...

let me catch you up.

I passed second year schooling, with an average mark of 94%

I have been dispatched to a new job, which is good!

and I wrote my class 6 learners license, which allows me to ride motorcycles.

I also did a little bit of sailing, and Tae and I went to kelowna for a weekend, and there was wallet drama, but it ended peacefully.

yay for caught up :)

a late post [Jun. 22nd, 2009|11:34 pm]
This is a bit late, but such is life.

We had our exam on single phase AC circuits last wednesday, and I got 87%. I had walked out of the exam confident that I'd scored in the mid ninetys though, so 87 was a bit of a let down. I did get the best mark in our class, which was nice, but there was a guy down the hall that got a 97, and I wanted to be that guy :(

our class work in transformers is going well, but the guys in the class are starting to get frustrated with our teacher. I don't feel like I've got much to complain about, seeing as I'm sitting around 90% as an average, but about 9 of the sixteen of us failed that single phase test. Tomorrow worries me, as we're going into autotransformers, and they seem somewhat complicated.

but, in more important news, we played our first playoff game on sunday :D and even better? we won!!!!

this is my very first, official hockey win. it was pretty freakin sweet. we played the number one team in our division, and we won 3-1. now we play them again on saturday, and if we win that, we play sunday.

well, it's post day (was post day) and it's seventeen minutes past my birthday.

this week I had my first of three exams on principles of single phase AC circuits, and I rode my bike to school, but only one day. This week I hope to ride for all 5 days. I got my passport, and I went to see my lady love, in seattle.

this weekend in seattle was fun, punctuated by awkward, but thankfully the awkward was short. today Tae and I went clothes shopping, (I now have shorts, and lots of them.) and I went home, to hockey, and then...

...

I SCORED A GOAL IN HOCKEY TONIGHT!!!

ok, I'd like to be a bit cooler about this, but really, this is my first ever game goal. so I'm pretty stoked. (on top of everything, it was a pretty goal, so I'm doubly proud)

now, I'm trying to settle down, because I've got to be up, and moving in roughly 5 hours.

*sighs* probably not getting much sleep tonight, I never do my first night back from Tae's house.

I went to school this week, (and there are nine weeks left). we had an exam on friday. I think I did well, but I'll find out tomorrow.

The course I'm taking is the second level of my apprenticeship studies. we work for a year or so, and then we attend classes for ten weeks, and we do this for a total of four years. (6000 hours of work experience, and 40 weeks of class) I'm a bit lucky, in that I've done a lot of math, and the trig of this course isn't new to me at all. I've been doing my best to help the guys around me, because I find that teaching a topic helps your understanding of it.

over the week I managed to get a bike, and now I will be riding my bike to school. the ride to school is about 10 km long, and I'm really looking forward to it. I've not been doing enough exercise, so this will be a nice change.

a useful link for some people's world building?

it's a news story from the nytimes, about how all the war dead for the last 6 year or so have been given an autopsy upon return to the united states, and some of the thing's they've learned from the procedure.

So, I meant to post something yesterday, but I'll post it today.

I was looking back through my lj the other day, and I realised that I've not posted a lot of stuff. (I was looking for an old address or something..)

so, in an effort to actually say something more concrete here, I'm going to try and post weekly, on sundays, while I'm at school, and maybe see if I can keep that up after I get out of school, and back to work.

Today, I'm on my way to my first school term. I challenged my first level, so despite the fact that this is my first term, it's the second of four levels of schooling. I've been an electricial apprentice now since februrary 2006, and I'm starting to grow a little tired of waiting to learn something. I would really like to do very well in this class, and take those results to BC Hydro, and ask them for a job.

as for yesterday, I went fly fishing yesterday, and I caught a little fish! it was pretty sweet! (I am a terrible fly fisherman, but I had a lot of fun, and I may get into it a little bit.) it's an interesting way to fish, and it's a lot of fun on a nice sunny day.

and not tears of joy either. [May. 12th, 2009|10:27 pm]
I weep for our future.

clearly, I'm not a fan of the bc 'liberal' party. but that's not the thing that really bothers me. the really troubling result of our provincial election is that less than 50% of potential voters bothered to come out and vote.

it's not like it's something that's hard to do. maybe we need to offer milk and cookies or something, so we can convince people to come out and vote... I don't know.

The New Democrat Party has a bit of an uninspiring leader, and their message is at best a bit muddled.

The Liberals prefer low voter turnout, as they don't want approval, as much as to just stay in power.

and the Greens were dealt a huge blow, as it looks like STV has failed.

I'm most upset about the failure of STV.

the good old hockey game [May. 11th, 2009|12:58 am]
is certainly the best game you can name

speaking of hockey, we had our first not loss tonight! (we tied, it should have been a win, but some dumb rule got in the way.)

a hockey update!

first, and most importantly.

The Vancouver Canucks won their first round best-of-seven playoff series in 4 straight games (this is a club first, they've never swept a seven game series before)

it was an overtime goal by Alexandre Burrows, with five seconds remaining in the first overtime period that sealed the game for Vancouver.

second, and very nearly as importantly.

I played in my first two real hockey games over the weekend.

I'm playing on a duffers team, we don't have a name, and we borrow jerseys from the duffers league. We're also not very good yet. we lost our first game 8-3, and our second 14-4. But I had a good time, and I'm really looking forward to the next game, (sunday at 9:15)

oh god, the sore. [Mar. 29th, 2009|10:39 pm]
today was my first sailing race of the year...

it was fairly breezy, 15 knots, and there were some good rollers, with a fair bit of chop as the day went on, so we got bounced around a bit, but I was racing with a great set of guys. I've never actually sailed with these guys before, and I slotted right in. our tacks were better than me and Judy's have been after weeks of racing together, and not once did I ever get any hackles up about the yelling that was going on in the cockpit. (all sailing races seem to involve yelling at times.)

but man am I sore.

it hurts to sit on anything hard, and I'm going to have some amazing bruises by the end of the week.

a pet peeve [Mar. 28th, 2009|12:52 am]
I'm watching a re-run of NUMB3RS, and I'm struck by a pet peeve.

I hate when bombs have blinky lights, or visible timers, or any of that garbage.

I mean, a clock is a valid time delay device, and the construction thereof isn't very complicated* but the hollywood trope of replacing the very valid mechanical time delay that an alarm clock would provide with a digital timer to make it a little more futuristic is remarkably frustrating.

most modern bombs use a jury rigged munitions fuses or mining detonators.

The film images of bricks of explosives are generally pretty decent, and the whole wires everywhere isn't far off, but for some reason there needs to be a timer in there, that's counting down, or a red LED blinking on the outside. these are plausible enough on test unit, but why would you include them in a final product?

Gah, I'm just grumpy

Ok, Stephen Colbert can stay. [Mar. 24th, 2009|11:54 pm]
I really do love Stephen Colbert.

He's joking with interviewing Neil Gaiman, and quotes a Tom Bombadil song, from memory.

I think he can stay :)

I love the word "malarky" [Mar. 22nd, 2009|03:11 am]
I was struck, while I walked home from downtown tonight, that the thing I miss most about not being in cadets, or anything like that any more (and haven't been for 10 years) is the route marches at night.

the walk home was roughly 6k, and there's a decent amount of elevation gain (well, it's really paltry, maybe, maybe 200 metres,) and I took it nice and slow really, at an hour and a half to get home, but I found myself stopping, and just listening for a while, so see what I could hear, and see...

I miss this. I miss stepping off the road, and quietly laying in the bush for an hour, just to see if anyone's following you.

basically I miss long, quiet walks in the night, with a fair bit of weight on your back, and the intention of catching someone at some sort of malarky.

ETA

generally when I go for a walk, I have a song stuck in my head.

tonight it was tom morello's cover of 'The Ghost of Tom Joad'

best narration in a webcomic? [Mar. 16th, 2009|02:23 am]
almost everyone I know has read this before, but I just did again, and I thought I'd re-post.

it's from Schlock Mercenary, and it's a testament to Howard's skill as a writer that this reads almost as well in transcript form as it does in comic form.

Cut for length, but really, you should read this, it won't take you long, it just takes up a lot of page real estate )

My favourite line is easily "Plan "E" vanishes in a puff of unpredictability and Colonel Pranger finds himself in the unenviable position of having to orchestrate twenty-five minutes or more of "winging it"."

If you've never read this before, go read it at www.schlockmercenary.com/d/20050529.html
